i guess what we’re really trying to say is
dear julia allison,
you don’t know me. i don’t really think you’d like to. i’m just a simple guy trying to make his living in new york as a photographer in the guise of a restaurant manager. i don’t have a huge social calendar, my retinue includes three unemployed people, i live paycheck to paycheck and i owe so much money to taxes, student loans, and film processing.
despite all this, i have a wonderful community behind me called tumblr, of which you too are a member. understandably you would be upset because people have been calling you out on all sorts of bullshit. i would be too. but you have to remember that i have to take all that, especially with every commenter dealing on a basis of some level of anonymity. i don’t have a friend like david karp who owns the whole goddamn thing that can just shut people down. i believe in freedom of speech.
you might be doing extra special tumblr research with your group model, but don’t forget that you’re putting yourself out there because you wanted an audience in the first place. if you’re going to sell pepsi, learn that someone else sells coke. you might taste delicious but some people are bound to argue otherwise.
don’t get all huffy that someone thinks you’re not little miss perfect. as much of a fantasy life you want to live, and a little bit of self-righteousness (“i haven’t asked david to take down any sites in a long time” implies that you’ve done this shit before), most of us tend to think we’re not that self-important. we like ourselves too, you know, just not as much as you may love blogging about yourself.
people like you make me lose my faith in humanity. but then i remember all of these other people i follow on tumblr, and you know what? i’m happy i know them because this kind of thing is just plain ridiculous.
